Poppy's Bishop Bread

This is a coffee cake recipe handed down to me by my grandmother. She made it every year when the Episcopal Bishop visited their small church in East Helena, Montana

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour

  • 3/4 cup white sugar

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 3/4 cup canola oil

  • pinch of salt

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • Enough hot water to dissolve baking soda

Directions

  1. Combine the first 7 ingredients.

  2. Save out one cup of this mixture to use as topping.

  3. Add 1 beaten egg, buttermilk and soda dissolved in water to the above mixture.

  4. Pour mixture into a greased 9 x 13 inch pan.

  5. Sprinkle the reserved mixture on top.

  6. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
