Centrally located on pastoral Orcas Island, Kangaroo House B&B is within walking distance of Eastsound shops, restaurants, the Orcas Performing Arts Center, and the Eastsound airstrip. It's a wonderful base for your cycling, kayaking, hiking, or whale-watching adventures.
Relax on the sunny deck, share a bottle of wine, and watch the birds and squirrels. Wander the garden paths amid tulips, poppies, and Love-in-a-mist. Pause on the secluded spot under the enormous sprawling plum tree, then later soak away your cares under the stars in the garden hot tub.
Breakfast at Kangaroo House is a multi-course, hearty beginning to your day. You may not even need lunch! We might start with fresh Orcas produced fruit, then our special homemade granola, Baked Migas, a plate of Jill's famous scones, or an Alsacian Rosti. We can accomodate your dietary restrictions, and you'll be asked about these when you make your reservation. While you linger over coffee, see if the Steller's Jays come for their daily ration of peanuts on the deck rail, and watch Ring-necked Pheasants keeping a wary eye for predators.
Our website features room descriptions, photos, rates, special offers, and links to a wide variety of island activities and resources. You can check availability or make reservations online, whether you visit our home page or click on the "Check Availability" link in the column to the right.
Kangaroo House is listed in many, many guidebooks, and can be found in multiple internet directories. It's been written up in magazines and newspapers, including Sunset, Gourmet, Elle, Pilot Getaways, the LA Times, the Oregonian, and the Washington Post.
How long should you stay? Although you could stay only one day at Kangaroo House, most guests agree that a first time visit of only one night is simply not enough to get more than a taste of Orcas Island. Unless you arrive early and stay late, you're shorting yourself. Depending on the season and your own desired level of activity, two or three nights suits most people well. Those who've been here before usually have a better idea of the length of stay best suited to them. Our record stay so far is ten days. Some guests have requested two weeks, but there were too many other reservations to accomodate them.
In the Winter, it's time to take advantage of short days to spend more time indoors with that special someone. Real peace and quiet can be found -- just the two of you walking down a deserted trail, checking to see if the Trumpeter Swans have returned to Cascade Lake. Strolling down the country lane to the shore at North Beach, then back to the inn and ask Jill or Charles for a pot of tea and a fire in the fieldstone fireplace, wrap up in a terry robe after the hot tub, and curl up with a good book.
There really is no "bad" weather in the Northwest - only inappropriate clothing. "Rush Hour" means coming downstairs for coffee before breakfast and playing a tune on the piano in the evening. Even "bad" weather on Orcas is better than the finest day working in corporate America --Don't you deserve a break? Now?
Spring: The plum tree blossoms in February, the daffodils in March, and the tulips can be glorious in April and May. You can enjoy great weather, quiet times, uncrowded restaurants and hiking trails. The irridescent Rufous Hummingbird returns from Arizona, and buzzes the competition at the deck feeders. The Goldfinches suddenly appear, looking for a handout of thistle seeds. Fresh sliced strawberries are heaped on the fluffiest pancakes you've ever had.
During the Summer, guests enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. See the "Orcas Island" page on our website to learn about kayaking, hiking, whale-watching, and more. There's lots to do, and the days are long. It may still be light at 10:00 o'clock at night. Fresh, local fruits are available, and Blackberry Granola Parfaits are often featured in August.
In the Fall, you'll find many of the island's visitors have departed, so roads, lodgings, ferries, restaurants, and hiking trails are delightfully uncrowded. Windy weather adds to the drama of the heady island experience.
