The Inn at Mallard Cove
Rooms starting at $165.00 Availability & Online Reservations
The Inn at Mallard Cove is an English Tudor style waterfront bed and breakfast inn located on fourteen heavily forested acres near Olympia, Washington. Secluded and peaceful, the Inn is the perfect place to enjoy a romantic getaway or relax after a day's work in the local area. We are surrounded on three sides by pristine forest that can never be developed. On the fourth side is one of Washington's five designated "Shorelines of Statewide Significance." A nature trail leads to 900 feet of private beach and, from there, by foot or by kayak, our guests enjoy access to the abundant natural beauty and wildlife of the Nisqually Estuary. The inn's flower, herb, fruit and vegetable gardens, all organic, please the eye and the palate.
Downstairs, guests are welcome in a five-room common area, which is decorated and furnished in the English Georgian period's eclectic style. An eight-hundred book library, glass conservatory, and two wood-burning Rumford fireplaces are just a few of the amenities available. Oak flooring, cut and milled specifically for the Inn from a sustainable forest, runs throughout the Inn and was hand-finished by the innkeepers using a non-toxic hardwax oil. The innkeepers serve three-course gourmet breakfasts in a bright dining room with large French doors and windows looking out on a 180-degree view of Puget Sound.
Upstairs are the three guest roooms, all with different color themes and all with custom-made English country home style bed hangings. The largest and most elegant of these is The Mallard Room, which has a queen-sized pillow top bed, fireplace, large jetted tub built for two, separate tiled rain shower, and a spacious sitting area. The Mallard Room's French Doors lead to a private deck, where guests will enjoy a commanding view of miles of glassy-smooth Puget Sound saltwater, nearby islands, and the snow-capped Olympic mountains.
The Olympic Room is so named because it too has a spacious private deck with the same view as The Mallard Room. A queen-size pillow top bed, fireplace, antique oak furniture, sitting area and tiled bath with jetted tub all do their part to comfort and pamper our guests.
Our third room is The Garden Room, whose major feature is a majestic, hand-made four-poster bed decorated with unbelievably detailed English bed hangings. The mattress is one of our "signature" queen-sized pillow tops that have received rave reviews form guests. A sitting area faces the fireplace. The private bath has both a jetted tub and separate tiled rain shower. French doors lead to a private, covered deck overlooking arces of forest and gardens.
Outside the inn are thirteen and a half acres of forest and nine hundred feet of salt waterfront beach, accessible by a gently sloping nature trail which begins in the garden. Three kayaks are available, at no charge to registered guests. for trips on some of the calmest waters in Puget Sound. The inn is only a twenty-minute paddle from the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, where marine and bird life is abundantly available for viewing. Other kayaking destinations are unlimited. The innkeepers, who love kayaking and birdwatching, will happily guide you or send you off with a map of the best places to see wildlife.
A popular stop on the kayaking tour is the Nisqually Reach Nature Center, a separate organization from the wildlife refuge but located on its western boundary. This can also be reached by a short walk form the inn (1.2 miles each way). Inside the nature center are salt water aquariums with living examples of shellfish and other organisms living in the rich Nisqually estuary. Exhibits help birdwatchers identify the shorebirds and waterfowl that populate our area and staff are on hand to answer questions from nature lovers. Outside the Nature Center is a pier with relief maps, displays, and a perfect view of the estuary and, weather permitting, majestic Mount Ranier.
Although the inn is located in a rural setting, we are only a twenty-minute drive from downtown Olympia, which is rich with history, cultural events, wonderful restaurants, and art galleries. Your innkeepers are great sources of information on what to see in the Olympia area. There is something for everyone!
