Touchet
Located in Walla Walla county, just a few miles west of Walla Walla, Touchet is a small town of just over 400 people.
In 1806 Lewis and Clark passed through the valley on their return trip. In the 1850s homesteaders started to settle the area. The Walla Walla and Columbia River Railroad from Wallula to Walla Walla was completed to Touchet in 1874, and eventually Walla Walla in 1875. This allowed local farmers to ship their wheat and to also receive shipments of other merchandise.
Today you can see the remains of some of the old infrastructure, and the area is obviously home to various agriculture. Grapevines and wheat cover the contours of the hills. The back roads in this area seem somewhat surreal, with their picturesque vistas.
