Orcas Island

Orcas Island is known historically as the “Gem” of the San Juan Islands for its blend of rural-paced life style, its diverse art, cultural activities and magical mix of lush forest, farm valleys, placid lakes and stunning mountains, all wrapped around a beautiful fjord. It is home to abundant wildlife including otters, black-tail deer, orca whales and unsurpassed bird watching.

The horseshoe shape of Orcas Island means you are never far from a beautiful vista of the sea as well as ponds and lakes. As the biggest island in the county, the drives on Orcas are a little longer, and the pace a little slower.

Orcas Island is made up of several hamlets and villages. On the western half of the island, Orcas Village, Westsound and Deer Harbor are all popular areas for visitors and boaters. On the mountainous eastern half of the island, Olga is a charming hamlet including a restaurant and cooperative art gallery inside a historic strawberry packing plant. Historical Rosario Mansion and grounds host many weddings and has a scenic marina. Eastsound Village is the hub of Orcas Island. Eastsound offers casual to fine dining, boutiques, galleries, a performing arts center, a first-run movie theater, and a history museum. The Funhouse (a children's discovery center), a world-class skate park, and tide pools are nearby.

The panoramic view of islands, water and mountains from atop 2,409-foot Mount Constitution is a must-see. It is noted as one of the best marine views on Earth. Situated in 5,000-acre Moran State Park, the mountain is marked with waterfalls and 30 miles of tranquil trails. Moran State Park also offers lakes for swimming, paddle boating and fishing.

Whale watching, sea kayaking and golfing can also be enjoyed on Orcas, as well as numerous festivals and a May-September Farmers' Market. Art and pottery galleries are found throughout the island.
